2. Pilane
Amazing open air museum with sculptures from all around the world. Pilane is considered to be one of Sweden’s most important and beautiful prehistoric sights. In the beautiful open country side, sheep graze on the soft hills. Until October 4th Pilane features some of the world’s most exciting sculptures by guest artists from USA, Spain, France, Belgium, Great Britain, Norway and Sweden. An amazing sculpture has arrived to Pilane from across the Atlantic. "Damski Czepek" by Ursula von Rydingsvard is the largest lady bonnet in the world. When showed in Madison Square Park in New York the positive sensation and aura about the work won the hearts of the New Yorkers and couples were queuing up to get married inside the artwork. The series of homeless animals by the British artist Laura Ford were probably the most memorable ones for us.
Open daily 9-18
Get there: Drive to Stenungsund and from there on towards Tjörn. After crossing Tjörn bridge, turn left at the traffic lights immediately after the bridge and follow road 169 towards Skärhamn. When you come to the crossroads at Wallhamn, turn right towards Kyrkesund. Pass through Kållekärr and turn right at the next roundabout, towards Kyrkesund. Follow the signs for Kyrkesund until you see the sign ‘Pilane och Gravfält’. Turn off to the left here.

3. Klädesholmen
We just love this little fishing village. It is actually about like walking in to a movie set. The picturesque white houses huddle close together along the narrow streets and the bare rocks around just makes the perfect scenery. Today Klädesholmen also boasts eight modern herring canning factories. This is why the renowned herring restaurant “Salt and Sill” is situated here. Salt & Sill serves traditional regional dishes, combined with inventive thinking. If you want to stay over night, the place offers a “floating hotel” that is definitely worth checking on. The hotel is a stark contrast to the surroundings, with a designed minimalistic feel to it. This place is also home to the fasting floating sauna in the world…
If you‘re on a tighter budget, don’t worry. Pass salt and sill and drive on a few more minutes till you reach “Kylen”. A wonderful little restaurant right at the waters edge. When the weather allows this place surely is a gem. Ask for the local fisherman Göta’s daily catch or go for the shrimp sandwich. We stayed tow nights in one of their little hostel style rooms and ate our way through their menu. So we know that the Ceasar Salad with smoked salmon is perfect after a day at the beach, and that the seafood soup is great as an evening meal. Customers come in on boats and scream out different boat brands that have parked around them when they need to leave, Nimbus, Maxi…bla bla bla…We know nothing about boats and boat life. But we are happy to be a part of it and it entails sipping wine and munching away on a chocolate cake on a bridge deck at Klädesholmen on warmish summer evenings.

4. Åstol
Our favourite author Birgitta Stenberg, can’t be wrong. The island of Åstol is the shit! This is a beautiful little island accessible by ferry from Rönnäng. The big, white building on the pier can be scene all the way from the mainland. It nowadays hosts a smokery and a restaurant which offers a superb view over the harbour. Check out their webpage for concerts and theme nights. We were there for a traditional “räkfrossa” (shrimp guzzle). We decided to go “all in” and did the whole schnapps and singing. We overindulged those smoked shrimps, that home made bread and aioli and could hardly walk the few metres back to Åstols Bed and Breakfast where we spent the night. However, if we could do it all over again, we would!
Get there: Ferry from Rönnäng

5. Sundsby Säteri
A nice old place, dating back to the 14th century. We went here before opening hours and took an hour or so to explore the surroundings. The area offers plenty or trails around grounds. We were amazed by all the frogs around the dams in the garden. There were not one or two but hundreds! Felt a bit like the final scene in Magnolia, it sure did. Anyway, we were the first customers of the day to buy a coffee in the nice little coffee-cottage. We made sure to try the Tjörn speciality, Äggost. ( Egg cheese). The place also has a small museum, a gift store and a bakery. A pleasant stop indeed.
Open in August, every day 11-18
Get there:
From the Tjörn bridge keep straight to the traffic lights and continue on 160 towards Orust. Turn left by the sign: Sundsy Säteri.
